Her Silent Roar 2020-2021
In 2020, when Covid had its first winter surge in the U.S., I set out to photograph Deerfield Beach, FL. A friend who lived nearby introduced me to the area - we often biked down A1A or the Intracoastal to chill at the beach or in the town.
It was an inviting and laid back place, but I noticed it becoming tired as Covid grew in strength. Local businesses closed down and motels emptied. Its relaxed quality turned eerie and desolate.
Witnessing a place I loved go into hibernation was tough. I wanted to document what remained, and found its empty spaces counterintuitive. Humanity’s course had shifted around the world, yet I found it most visible in this small beach town.
From that winter on, I began to characterize physical places as living things - like animals and plants - with phases of dormancy and wakefulness. That idea became the basis of “Her Silent Roar.”
